The House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee published a report on 23 October 2026, 'Food and Weight Management: Modernising obesity treatment'. It calls for wider NHS access to GLP-1 weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro, and for obesity to be treated as a long-term, managed condition, like diabetes.
The BBC reports that the committee described the current plan for 220,000 people in England to receive Mounjaro on NHS prescription in 2028 as a 'woefully small number' and 'unambitious', around 6% of eligible people. The committee says limited NHS supply has created a two-tier system determined by ability to pay. According to the BBC, more than a million people have been paying privately for weight-loss injections, including Mounjaro and Wegovy.
The committee recommends a national plan for weight-loss services with more capacity, clear waiting times and structured pathways, a large increase in capacity for bariatric surgery, involvement of online providers to improve access, and action on the black market in weight-loss drugs. NHS England told the BBC it was looking at ways to accelerate the rollout, but was prioritising these treatments for people with the most severe and complex needs.
